When Threads Go Wrong

Threading bugs show up as freezes or sudden crashes. Knowing the usual suspects lets you diagnose them quickly.

The Frozen UI Symptom

An app that stops responding usually has a blocked main thread. Something heavy is running where only UI work belongs.

Find the Blocking Call

Look for synchronous network or disk calls on the main thread. Move them into a coroutine on a background dispatcher.

withContext(Dispatchers.Default) { slowCall() }

Wrong-Thread UI Crashes

On iOS, updating UI off the main thread can crash. The fix is to switch back with Dispatchers.Main before touching views.

withContext(Dispatchers.Main) { render(data) }

Read the Native Stack Trace

Kotlin/Native crashes print a stack trace in Xcode logs. The top frames usually point straight at the offending call.

The Old Freeze Error

On older setups you may see InvalidMutabilityException. The cure is to upgrade to the new memory manager, which removes freezing.

Watch for Deadlocks

A deadlock appears as a permanent hang with no crash. It often means two locks are taken in opposite orders by two threads.

Add Logging at Boundaries

Log the thread name as work crosses dispatchers. Seeing where execution actually runs makes the bug obvious fast.

println("on: " + currentThreadName())

Reproduce It Reliably

Intermittent crashes need pressure. Loop the suspect path from many coroutines in a test until the failure appears every run.

Lean on Structured Concurrency

Scoping work prevents leaked coroutines that crash later. Cancelling a scope stops every child cleanly and on time.

scope.cancel()

Build a Debug Checklist

Ask three things: is the main thread blocked, is UI touched off-main, and is state shared unsafely? That covers most crashes. 🔍

Quick Check

A final check on debugging threads.

Recap

You learned to spot blocked main threads, off-main UI crashes, and deadlocks, then fix them with the right dispatcher. 🎉
