S3 for Static Websites

Amazon S3 isn't just for storing files; it's also a powerful and cost-effective way to host static websites.

Static websites are made of fixed content like HTML pages, CSS stylesheets, JavaScript files, and images. They don't require server-side processing or databases.

Why Host on S3?

Hosting your static website on S3 offers several compelling advantages:

  • Scalability: Automatically handles traffic from a few visitors to millions.
  • High Availability: Data is redundantly stored across multiple facilities.
  • Low Cost: Pay-as-you-go pricing, often much cheaper than traditional hosting.
  • No Server Management: AWS takes care of all the underlying infrastructure.

Enabling Website Hosting

To turn your S3 bucket into a website, you enable the 'Static website hosting' feature in the bucket's properties.

You'll specify an index document (e.g., index.html) which is the default page loaded when visitors access your site. You can also define an optional error document (e.g., error.html).

Granting Public Access

For your website to be viewable by everyone, your S3 bucket's content must be publicly readable. This requires configuring a bucket policy.

This policy grants s3:GetObject permission to all users ("Principal": "*") for all objects in your bucket.

{
  "Version": "2012-10-17",
  "Statement": [
    {
      "Sid": "PublicReadGetObject",
      "Effect": "Allow",
      "Principal": "*",
      "Action": "s3:GetObject",
      "Resource": "arn:aws:s3:::YOUR-BUCKET-NAME/*"
    }
  ]
}

Uploading Your Website Files

Once hosting is enabled and the policy is set, simply upload your website files directly to the root of your S3 bucket.

Ensure your main HTML file (e.g., index.html) is at the bucket's root level, along with your CSS, JavaScript, and image files.

Testing the S3 Website Endpoint

After configuring your bucket, S3 provides a unique website endpoint URL. It typically looks like this:

http://your-bucket-name.s3-website-REGION.amazonaws.com

You can use this URL to immediately test your static website and ensure everything is working correctly.

Custom Domains with Route 53

While the S3 website endpoint works, it's not very user-friendly. To use your own domain (e.g., www.mycoolsite.com), you'll integrate with Amazon Route 53.

In Route 53, you create an Alias record that points your custom domain name directly to your S3 website endpoint. This makes your site accessible via your chosen domain.

Introducing CloudFront

For even better performance and security, you can place Amazon CloudFront in front of your S3 static website.

CloudFront is AWS's Content Delivery Network (CDN). It caches your website's content at global 'edge locations' closer to your users.

CloudFront's Key Advantages

Integrating CloudFront with S3 offers significant benefits:

  • Faster Delivery: Content served from the nearest edge location, reducing latency.
  • HTTPS/SSL: Easily enable secure connections with custom SSL certificates.
  • Reduced S3 Load: CloudFront caches content, decreasing direct requests to your S3 bucket.
  • Geo-Restriction: Control who can access your content based on their geographic location.

Check Your Knowledge

You've learned how S3, Route 53, and CloudFront work together for static website hosting. Let's test your understanding of CloudFront's role.

Recap: Hosting Your Site

You've learned how to host static websites on AWS S3! This powerful combination provides a scalable, highly available, and cost-effective solution.

  • S3: Stores your website files and enables hosting.
  • Route 53: Connects your custom domain name to the S3 endpoint.
  • CloudFront: Speeds up content delivery and adds HTTPS security.

This setup is ideal for blogs, portfolios, and marketing sites.
