More Than Just Digital Cash

Think of Bitcoin as a digital currency primarily for transactions. Ethereum takes this further.

It's often called a 'world computer' because it allows developers to deploy arbitrary code (smart contracts) that runs exactly as programmed, without downtime, censorship, or third-party interference.

Who's Who: Ethereum Accounts

Interacting with the Ethereum blockchain means using accounts. These are entities that can hold Ether (Ethereum's native currency) and send transactions.

There are two main types of accounts on Ethereum:

  • Externally Owned Accounts (EOAs)
  • Contract Accounts

Your Personal Wallet: EOAs

Externally Owned Accounts (EOAs) are the accounts you, as a user, control. They are managed by a private key, which acts like a super-secret password.

With an EOA, you can:

  • Send and receive Ether.
  • Interact with smart contracts.
  • Sign transactions.

Code-Driven: Contract Accounts

Contract Accounts are controlled by the code of a smart contract that lives on the blockchain. They don't have a private key.

Instead, their behavior is entirely defined by the smart contract's code. They can hold Ether, but can only send transactions or interact with other contracts when triggered by an EOA or another contract.

Making Moves: Ethereum Transactions

A transaction on Ethereum is an instruction, signed by an EOA, that changes the state of the blockchain. It's how you send Ether, deploy smart contracts, or interact with existing ones.

Every transaction is recorded on the blockchain and is immutable once confirmed.

Anatomy of a Transaction

Each transaction contains several key pieces of information:

  • to: The recipient's address (EOA or Contract Account).
  • value: The amount of Ether to send (optional).
  • data: Raw bytecode for contract deployment or function call data.
  • nonce: A transaction counter for the sender, preventing replay attacks.
  • gasLimit & gasPrice: For transaction fees.

Ether: Fueling the Network

Ether (ETH) is the native cryptocurrency of the Ethereum blockchain. It plays two crucial roles:

  • Value Transfer: It's used as a digital currency for payments.
  • Gas: It pays for the computational resources required to execute operations on the network.

Gas: The Network's Engine

Every operation on the Ethereum network—from sending Ether to running smart contract code—requires computational effort. This effort is measured in units called gas.

You pay for this gas using Ether. This mechanism prevents network spam and allocates resources fairly, as users must pay for the computing power they consume.
