You've described your idea and broken it into steps. Now you can ask the AI to turn it all into a clear plan before any building starts.

A plan is a roadmap. It lists what will be built, in what order, so you both agree before work begins.

This lesson shows you how to ask for a good one.

Why Ask for a Plan First

Planning first saves time. You catch mistakes on paper instead of in the app.

It also helps the AI stay on track. With a plan, it knows where it's going instead of guessing step by step.

Before we build anything, please make a simple plan for my water-reminder app so we agree on the steps first.

Ask in Plain Words

You don't need fancy wording. Just paste your idea and your steps, then ask for a plan.

Tell the AI the kind of plan you want: short, numbered, and easy to read.

Ask for an Ordered List

A good plan is usually a numbered list, from the first thing to build to the last. Order matters — some steps need others to be done first.

Ask the AI to put the steps in the right order for you.

Put the plan in order, starting with the most basic part. Number each step so I can follow along.

Ask Why, Not Just What

A plan is clearer when each step has a short reason. "Build the button first because the whole app depends on it."

Reasons help you understand the plan and spot anything that seems off.

For each step in the plan, add one short sentence explaining why we do it in that order.

Ask the AI to Keep It Simple

AI assistants sometimes suggest big, fancy plans. Remind it to match your level and goal.

Say you're a beginner and want the smallest plan that gets a working app.

I'm a beginner. Please give me the simplest possible plan that still results in a working app. No extra features.

Ask About Unknowns

A good plan also points out the parts that aren't clear yet. Ask the AI to flag anything it's unsure about, or anything it needs you to decide.

This turns hidden surprises into simple questions you can answer.

In the plan, list any decisions you need from me, and any parts you're unsure about, as questions.

Ask for the Tools It Will Use

You can ask the plan to name what tools or building blocks it will use — but in simple terms.

You don't have to understand every name. Seeing them just helps you ask questions if something seems too complicated.

In simple terms, tell me what tools or parts the app will use, and explain each one in one short sentence.

Read the Plan Carefully

When the plan comes back, read it slowly. Ask yourself:

  • Does each step make sense to me?
  • Is anything missing that I care about?
  • Is anything more complicated than I wanted?

If something feels wrong, that's normal — you'll fix it next lesson.

A Plan Is a Draft, Not a Contract

The first plan is just a starting point. You're allowed to change it, cut things, or add things.

Don't feel you must accept it as-is. The best plans come from a back-and-forth between you and the AI.

Save the Plan Somewhere

Once you like the plan, keep it where you can see it. You'll use it as your guide while building.

You can even ask the AI to keep the plan in a simple file or note so you can check off steps as you go.
