TypeScript originally had namespaces (formerly 'internal modules') to organize code. Modern TypeScript uses ES modules instead. This lesson explains when each is appropriate.

What Is a Namespace

A namespace is a TypeScript-specific way to group related code under a named scope using the `namespace` keyword.

    return Math.sqrt((a.x - b.x) ** 2 + (a.y - b.y) ** 2);

Accessing Namespace Members

Access namespace members via the namespace name with dot notation.
const p1: Geometry.Point = { x: 0, y: 0 };
const p2: Geometry.Point = { x: 3, y: 4 };
const d = Geometry.distance(p1, p2); // 5

Nested Namespaces

Namespaces can be nested.

Namespace Merging

Namespaces support declaration merging — two namespace declarations with the same name are merged.
namespace Validation {
  export function validate(s: string): boolean { return s.length > 0; }

  export function sanitize(s: string): string { return s.trim(); }
}

Why Modules Are Preferred

ES modules are the JavaScript standard. They are supported by all bundlers, tree-shaken efficiently, and work natively in modern browsers and Node.js.

The Module Equivalent of a Namespace

In modern TypeScript, a namespace becomes simply a file. Export what you want public, keep the rest private.

  return Math.sqrt((a.x - b.x) ** 2 + (a.y - b.y) ** 2);

Namespaces Still Used in Declaration Files

Namespaces are still widely used in .d.ts declaration files for global libraries (like DOM types, Node.js types) because they augment the global scope.

Triple-Slash References (Legacy)

Before ES modules, triple-slash directives referenced other files. Today, tsconfig includes and module imports replace them.

When to Still Use Namespaces

Use namespaces: (1) in declaration files for ambient global types, (2) when augmenting existing global namespaces from libraries.

Migrating from Namespaces to Modules

Replace `namespace Foo {}` with a module file. Replace `/// ` with imports. The TypeScript team documented this migration path.
