Intro

This lesson introduces Swift Package Manager (SPM): manage modules, dependencies, and builds.

Init package

Use swift package init to start a new package. Layout includes Package.swift, Sources/, Tests/.

// In terminal:
// $ swift package init --type executable
// Creates Package.swift, Sources/, Tests/

Package.swift

Package.swift defines name, products, dependencies, and targets.

// Package.swift
// swift-tools-version:5.9
import PackageDescription
let package = Package(
    name: "MyTool",
    targets: [.executableTarget(name: "MyTool")]
)

Build & run

Use swift build to compile and swift run to execute targets.

// In terminal:
// $ swift build
// $ swift run MyTool

Tests

swift test runs unit tests defined in the Tests folder.

// In terminal:
// $ swift test
// Runs unit tests in Tests/

Import modules

Use import to bring in standard or package modules into your source files.

// In Sources/MyTool/main.swift
import Foundation
print("Hello, Foundation")

Init command Q

Recap

Recap: Use SwiftPM for modules. swift package init creates layout; build, run, test with commands; import modules with import.
