Boolean Logic and Comparisons

Master the use of logical operators and comparison expressions to evaluate conditions.

Lesson 2 of 410 steps

Boolean Logic and Comparisons is a free Python Academy lesson on CoddyKit. This is lesson 2 of 4. You can read the complete lesson below for free — then practise it hands-on in the browser with a built-in code editor and a 24/7 AI tutor. It is part of the Python Academy learning path, and your progress syncs across the web and the CoddyKit app. The Python Academy course includes 4 lessons in total.

Introduction to Boolean Logic and Comparisons

Boolean logic and comparison operators are essential for decision-making in programming. They allow you to compare values and combine conditions.

In this lesson, you’ll learn about logical operators (and, or, not) and comparison operators (==, !=, <, >, etc.).

Boolean Logic and Comparisons — illustration 1

What is Boolean Logic?

Boolean logic deals with True or False values. These values are the result of logical and comparison operations.

For example:

# Boolean example
is_sunny = True
print(is_sunny)

Logical Operators

Logical operators combine conditions. Here are the main ones:

  • and: Both conditions must be true.
  • or: At least one condition must be true.
  • not: Reverses the condition.

For example:

# Logical operators example
x = 5
y = 10
print(x > 3 and y > 8)
print(x > 3 or y < 5)
print(not x > 3)

Comparison Operators

Comparison operators compare values and return True or False. Here are some examples:

  • ==: Equal to
  • !=: Not equal to
  • <: Less than
  • >: Greater than
  • <=: Less than or equal to
  • >=: Greater than or equal to

Examples of Comparison Operators

Let’s look at some examples:

# Comparison operators example
x = 10
y = 20
print(x == y)
print(x != y)
print(x < y)

Combining Logical and Comparison Operators

You can combine logical and comparison operators for complex conditions:

# Combining logical and comparison operators
x = 15
y = 10
z = 20
print(x > y and z > x)

Practical Example

Let’s use what we’ve learned in a practical example:

# Practical example
age = 18
has_license = True
if age >= 18 and has_license:
    print("You can drive.")
else:
    print("You cannot drive.")

Common Mistakes with Logical and Comparison Operators

Here are some common mistakes to avoid:

  • Using = instead of == for comparisons.
  • Forgetting to use parentheses for clarity in complex conditions.

What Did We Learn?

In this lesson, you learned:

  • The basics of Boolean logic.
  • Logical operators: and, or, not.
  • Comparison operators: ==, !=, <, >, etc.
  • How to combine logical and comparison operators.

Great job! Let’s move on to the next topic.
