Celsius and Fahrenheit

Two ways to measure.

Hi friend! 👋 Have you ever heard someone say it is 30 degrees outside? But wait... 30 degrees of WHAT? 🤔

There are two main ways to measure temperature: Celsius and Fahrenheit. Let's meet them both! 🌡️

Meet Celsius 🇪🇺

Celsius is used in MOST countries around the world! 🌍

  • Water freezes at 0°C ❄️
  • Water boils at 100°C 🔥

Easy to remember: 0 is icy, 100 is bubbly! 🫧

Meet Fahrenheit 🇺🇸

Fahrenheit is used mostly in the USA! 🦅

  • Water freezes at 32°F ❄️
  • Water boils at 212°F 🔥

The numbers are bigger and a little funny, right? 😄

Same Day, Two Numbers 🤯

Here is something cool: the SAME weather can be written two ways! ☀️

A warm sunny day might be 25°C OR 77°F. Same warmth, different number!

Body Temperature 🤒

Your body is normally about 37°C which is 98.6°F. 🌡️

If a thermometer shows a higher number, you might have a fever! 🤧

Storing Temperatures 📦

In Python we keep numbers in variables (little boxes with names). 📦

Let's store a temperature so we can use it later!

Hot or Cold? 🧣

We can ask Python to decide if it is hot or cold using if! 🧠

If the number is high, it is hot. If low, it is cold!

if temp > 25:

Why Two Systems? 🤷

Long ago, different scientists made their own thermometers. 👨‍🔬

  • Mr. Celsius liked 0 and 100 for water
  • Mr. Fahrenheit picked different numbers

Both still exist today, so it helps to know both! 🤝

A Weather Robot 🤖

Imagine a tiny weather robot that reads the temperature and tells you what to wear! 🤖👕

Degrees Symbol °

That little circle ° means degrees. 🔵

We write °C for Celsius and °F for Fahrenheit. In code we can just print the letter C or F!
