Who Connects You
To reach the internet you need an Internet Service Provider (ISP). It connects your home to the wider internet — your on-ramp to the whole network.
Tiers of Providers
ISPs come in tiers. Tier 1 reaches the whole internet without paying anyone; Tier 2 connects regions; Tier 3 serves local customers. Layers carry your traffic up.
The Internet Backbone
At the core are the backbones: ultra-fast, long-distance links run by Tier 1 providers. They are the major highways carrying traffic between continents.
Undersea and Long-Haul Cables
Much of the backbone is fiber, including undersea cables crossing oceans. They carry most international traffic — the internet is not all wireless.
Peering Between Networks
Providers swap traffic through peering, often for free because it helps both sides. It hands data off directly instead of routing through a distant third party.
Transit You Pay For
When peering cannot reach somewhere, a smaller network buys transit — paying a bigger ISP to carry its traffic. Most mix peering where free, transit where needed.
Last-Mile Connections
The link from your ISP to your home is the last mile — fiber, cable, DSL, or cellular. It is often the slowest part, which is why speeds vary by area.
How Your Traffic Flows
Loading a far-off site, your packets rise from your local ISP to a regional one, onto a backbone, across, and down to the server. The reply comes back the same way.
Redundancy in the Core
Backbones build in redundancy, so one cut does not break the internet. Extra paths let traffic reroute — a damaged cable usually just slows things down.
Why It Matters to You
Knowing ISPs and backbones explains why some connections are fast and others slow. A problem near home looks different from a cut backbone far away.
The Layered Highway
Picture the internet as roads: your last mile is the driveway, your ISP the city streets, regional providers the highways, and backbones the interstates. 🛣️
