Basic Network Utilities (ping, ip, netstat)
Use fundamental commands to test network connectivity, configure network interfaces, and monitor network connections.
Network Utilities: The Basics
Ever wonder how your computer talks to other devices or the internet? Network utilities are command-line tools that help us understand, diagnose, and manage network connections.
In this lesson, you'll learn essential commands to check connectivity, view network settings, and monitor active connections on your Linux system.
Test Connectivity with `ping`
The ping command is your go-to for checking if a host is reachable on a network. It sends small data packets (ICMP echo requests) and waits for replies.
A successful ping means the host is online and reachable. Let's try to ping Google's servers.
