Power Needs a Loop
Electricity only flows in a complete circuit: out from a power pin, through your part, and back to ground. Break the loop and nothing works.
What Ground Really Is
Ground, labeled GND, is the return path and the zero-volt reference. Every voltage on your board is measured against it.
