Power Needs a Loop
Electricity only flows in a complete circuit: out from a power pin, through your part, and back to ground. Break the loop and nothing works.
What Ground Really Is
Ground, labeled GND, is the return path and the zero-volt reference. Every voltage on your board is measured against it.
The 5V and 3.3V Pins
Arduino offers a 5V pin and a 3.3V pin. Match the voltage to your part, since some modules only tolerate 3.3V.
Share a Common Ground
The number one rule with multiple devices: they must all share one common ground. Without it, signals float and readings go wild.
Mistake: Floating Ground
A sensor on its own power but no shared GND gives garbage data. Always run a ground wire back to the Arduino. ⚠️
Mistake: The Short Circuit
A short is when power connects straight to ground with nothing in between. Current spikes, parts heat up, and damage follows fast. 🔥
Spot a Short Early
If your board grows hot or resets when plugged in, suspect a short. Unplug at once and trace your power and ground wires.
Mistake: Backward Power
Swapping + and - can fry a chip instantly. Double-check polarity on modules before you ever apply power.
Mind the Pin's Limit
An Arduino pin sources only about 20mA safely. Motors and many LEDs at once exceed that and can damage the chip.
Big Loads Need Their Own Supply
For motors or strips, use an external supply and only share ground with the Arduino. The pin then just gives the command.
Color Your Wires
A simple habit prevents chaos: red for power, black for ground. Consistent wire colors make mistakes jump out at a glance. 🎨
