Being Honest About Using AI

When and how to disclose that AI helped with your work.

Why Disclosure Matters

Using AI is not cheating or shameful — most people now use it for something. But there are moments when hiding that AI helped crosses a line, because it misleads people who are trusting your judgment, effort, or authenticity. Honest disclosure protects your credibility and respects your audience. The skill is knowing when it matters.

The Core Principle

One simple test covers most cases: would the person be upset or misled if they knew AI did this part? If a teacher believes you wrote your essay, a client believes you personally crafted their report, or readers believe a human reporter checked the facts — and AI did it instead — then non-disclosure is a problem. Match honesty to expectation.
