This lesson will guide you through the complete process for both the Google Play Store (for Android) and the Apple App Store (for iOS).

Pre-Launch Checklist

Before you even think about uploading, ensure your app is polished and ready:

  • Thorough Testing: Ensure your app is stable and bug-free.
  • Content Rating: Determine the appropriate age rating.

Android: Project Setup & Versioning

For Android, you need to configure your app's unique identifier and version details. This is primarily done in your android/app/build.gradle file.

The applicationId must be unique across Google Play. versionCode is an internal integer, and versionName is the user-visible string.

Android: Signing Your App

Every Android app must be digitally signed with a certificate before it can be installed. This proves your app's authenticity and ensures updates come from you.

You'll generate a keystore file, which contains your private key. Keep this file extremely secure and backed up, as you'll need it for all future updates!

Android: Keystore Configuration

After creating your keystore, you need to tell your Flutter project how to use it. Create a key.properties file in your android folder and reference it in android/app/build.gradle.

This approach helps secure your signing credentials while building your app.

Android: Building for Release

Once configured, you can build your release-ready Android App Bundle (AAB). The AAB format is recommended as it allows Google Play to optimize app delivery for different devices.

Always use the --release flag to ensure your app is optimized for performance and size.

Google Play Console: Overview

The Google Play Console is your portal to manage and publish Android apps. You'll need a developer account, which involves a one-time registration fee.

Here you'll create your app listing, upload your AAB, manage releases, and monitor performance and user reviews.

Your store listing is what users see. Make it compelling!

  • App Name: Clear and searchable.
  • Short Description: A catchy summary.
  • Full Description: Detailed features and benefits.
  • Screenshots & Feature Graphic: High-quality visuals that showcase your app.

iOS: Project Setup & Team

For iOS, you'll work with Xcode. Open your Flutter project's ios folder in Xcode.

Ensure your Bundle Identifier is unique (e.g., com.yourcompany.yourapp) and set your Version and Build numbers. You'll also need to join the Apple Developer Program ($99/year).

iOS: Archiving & App Store Connect

In Xcode, go to Product > Archive to create an archive of your app. This prepares it for distribution.

After archiving, you can validate and upload your app to App Store Connect. From there, you'll manage your app's listing, beta testing (TestFlight), and submission for review.
