Firebase Realtime Database offers a powerful feature: offline persistence. It allows your app to continue working even when there's no network connection.

Smart Caching by Firebase

When your app is online, Firebase automatically caches a portion of your Realtime Database data locally. This means recent data is already on the device.

When you enable full offline persistence, Firebase takes this a step further. It stores all data that your app actively uses, allowing reads and writes to continue seamlessly.

Enabling offline persistence is surprisingly simple! You just need to call a single method on your Firebase database instance.

Setting Up Offline Mode

Managing Your Offline Cache

By default, Firebase Realtime Database stores up to 10MB of data offline. This is usually enough for many apps.

If your app needs to store more, you can configure the cache size:

  • Use the setCacheSize() method.
  • Specify the size in bytes (e.g., 1024 * 1024 * 100 for 100MB).
  • Be mindful of device storage limits!

Seamless Offline Reads

When offline persistence is enabled and you lose connection, any read operations (like addValueEventListener or addListenerForSingleValueEvent) will automatically try to fetch data from the local cache first.

This means users can still view data they've accessed recently, even without an internet connection.

Queuing Offline Writes

Offline persistence isn't just for reads! When your app is offline and you perform a write operation (e.g., setValue(), updateChildren()), Firebase queues these operations locally.

Once the app regains an internet connection, Firebase automatically synchronizes these queued writes to the server, ensuring your data is eventually consistent.

Sync Conflicts & Resolution

While powerful, offline persistence can introduce consistency challenges. If multiple users modify the same data offline and then reconnect, conflicts can arise.

Firebase Realtime Database handles these using a "last-write-wins" approach by default. More complex conflict resolution often requires server-side logic (like Cloud Functions).

Knowing Your Network State

It's often useful to know if your app is currently connected to Firebase. Firebase provides a special location in your database for this:

  • .info/connected: This is a boolean value.
  • true when connected, false otherwise.
