The Development Loop

Authoring a chart is iterative: edit, render, install or upgrade, repeat. A tight loop catches mistakes before they hit the cluster.

Lint Before You Install

Start with helm lint. It checks your chart for structural problems and missing fields without ever contacting a cluster.

Render to Read the Output

Next run helm template to see the exact manifests. Reading the YAML is the fastest way to spot a templating bug.

Dry Run Against the Server

Add --dry-run to ask Kubernetes to validate the manifests without creating anything. It catches schema errors lint cannot.

helm install web . --dry-run

Install for Real

When it looks right, install. The first argument is the release name and the dot points Helm at the chart in the current directory.

helm install web .

Edit, Then Upgrade

Change a template or value, then push it with helm upgrade. Helm diffs against the live release and applies only what changed.

helm upgrade web .

Upgrade or Install in One Step

During development, upgrade --install installs if the release is new and upgrades if it exists. One command for either case.

helm upgrade --install web .

Override While Iterating

Test different settings fast with --set, no file edits needed. Great for trying a tag or replica count on the fly.

helm upgrade --install web . --set replicaCount=3

Watch the Pods Appear

Helm hands resources to Kubernetes; verify with kubectl get pods. Your new replicas should move toward Running.

Roll Back a Bad Change

If an upgrade misbehaves, helm rollback restores a previous revision in seconds. Iterating safely means recovering fast.

Tear Down When Done

Clean up an experiment with helm uninstall. It removes the release and the resources it created from the namespace.
