Start From a Template

You rarely build a chart from nothing. The helm create command scaffolds a complete, working chart you can edit. 🚀

helm create mychart

What the Command Makes

It builds a new directory named after your chart, filled with conventional files and folders ready to install.

mychart/
  Chart.yaml
  values.yaml
  templates/
  charts/

The Chart.yaml Stub

You get a starter Chart.yaml with the name filled in, a default version, and an appVersion you can adjust.

apiVersion: v2
name: mychart
version: 0.1.0
appVersion: "1.16.0"

A Working values.yaml

The generated values.yaml ships with sensible defaults, like an image and a replica count, so the chart installs out of the box.

replicaCount: 1
image:
  repository: nginx
  tag: ""

Ready-Made Templates

The templates folder comes preloaded with a Deployment, Service, ServiceAccount, and more, all wired to your values.

templates/deployment.yaml
templates/service.yaml
templates/_helpers.tpl

It Installs As-Is

The scaffold is not a stub: the default chart deploys a real nginx app right away, giving you a known-good starting point.

helm install demo ./mychart

Naming the Chart

The name you pass becomes the directory name and the chart name in Chart.yaml. Use lowercase letters and dashes.

helm create my-web-app

Then You Customize

From here you delete what you do not need and reshape the rest. The scaffold is a starting point, not a finished product.

The .helmignore File

It also drops a .helmignore file. Like .gitignore, it lists patterns Helm should skip when packaging the chart.

.git
*.tmp
.DS_Store

Using a Starter Chart

Teams can define a reusable starter with --starter so every new chart begins from a shared, opinionated baseline.

helm create mychart --starter mystarter

Why Scaffold First

Scaffolding saves time and bakes in Helm conventions, so your chart looks familiar to anyone who has used Helm before. 🎯

Recap

helm create scaffolds a working chart with Chart.yaml, values, and templates. It is a known-good baseline you then trim and edit. ✅
