Deploying Charts with an Argo CD Application

Pointing Argo CD at a chart and values.

Lesson 2 of 413 steps

Deploying Charts with an Argo CD Application is a free DevOps Bootcamp lesson on CoddyKit. This is lesson 2 of 4. Any 3 lessons of this learning path are free to read in full — after that, CoddyKit PRO unlocks every lesson, plus hands-on practice with a built-in code editor and a 24/7 AI tutor. It is part of the DevOps Bootcamp learning path, and your progress syncs across the web and the CoddyKit app. The DevOps Bootcamp course includes 4 lessons in total.

The Application CRD

In Argo CD, you describe what to deploy with an Application custom resource. It links a source chart to a destination cluster.

Pointing at a Chart

The source block names a Helm repoURL, the chart name, and a targetRevision (the chart version) Argo CD should sync.

source:
  repoURL: https://charts.bitnami.com/bitnami
  chart: nginx
  targetRevision: 15.5.2

Choosing the Destination

The destination block sets the target server and namespace. Use the in-cluster URL to deploy into the cluster Argo CD runs in.

destination:
  server: https://kubernetes.default.svc
  namespace: web

Inline Helm Values

Under source.helm you supply values as YAML, exactly the overrides you would normally pass to helm install.

helm:
  values: |
    replicaCount: 3
    service:
      type: ClusterIP

Helm Parameters

For single overrides you can use helm.parameters, which behave like helm install --set name=value pairs.

helm:
  parameters:
    - name: replicaCount
      value: "3"

Argo CD Renders Helm

Argo CD does not run helm install. It runs helm template to render manifests, then applies them and tracks each resource it created.

The Sync Action

Bringing the live cluster in line with the Application is called a sync. You can trigger it from the UI, the CLI, or automatically.

argocd app sync nginx

Automated Sync

Set syncPolicy.automated so Argo CD applies new commits without a manual click, keeping the release continuously up to date.

syncPolicy:
  automated:
    prune: true
    selfHeal: true

Health and Status

Argo CD reports each Application as Synced or OutOfSync, plus a health status, so you see at a glance if the release is healthy.

A Git-Hosted Chart

The source can also be your own chart in a Git path, not just a packaged repo, letting Argo CD deploy charts straight from your monorepo.

source:
  repoURL: https://github.com/me/infra
  path: charts/api
  targetRevision: main

Commit, Then Sync

You edit the Application or its values in Git, commit, and Argo CD reconciles. The whole release is driven by what is in the repo.

Quick Check

Where do you put Helm overrides inside an Argo CD Application?

Recap: Argo CD Applications

An Argo CD Application links a Helm chart source to a destination, carries your values, and syncs the cluster to match Git. 🚀
