One Command for Every Deploy

In a pipeline you want a single deploy command that works the first time and every time after. helm upgrade --install is that command. 🚀

Why --install Makes It Idempotent

The --install flag tells Helm to install the release if it is missing, or upgrade it if it already exists. No branching logic in your CI script.

helm upgrade --install myapp ./mychart

The Short Form -i

You will often see -i as the shorthand for --install. Both mean the same install-or-upgrade behavior automation relies on.

helm upgrade -i myapp ./mychart -f values-prod.yaml

Add --atomic for Safety

The --atomic flag makes the upgrade all-or-nothing: if the rollout fails, Helm automatically rolls back to the previous working revision.

helm upgrade -i myapp ./mychart --atomic

atomic Implies a Wait

Because it must judge success, --atomic turns on --wait. Helm blocks until resources are ready, then keeps them or reverts everything.

Always Set a --timeout

Pair atomic with an explicit --timeout so a stuck pod cannot hang your pipeline forever. When time runs out, the automatic rollback fires.

helm upgrade -i myapp ./mychart --atomic --timeout 5m

Pin the Chart Version

For reproducible deploys, pass --version so CI installs an exact chart version, never whatever floats to the top of the repo.

helm upgrade -i myapp myrepo/mychart --version 1.4.2 --atomic

Inject Build Values Cleanly

Feed the new image tag from your build with --set, while keeping the rest of your config versioned in a values file passed via -f.

helm upgrade -i myapp ./mychart -f values-prod.yaml --set image.tag=$SHA

Create the Namespace Once

On a fresh environment add --create-namespace so the first deploy provisions its namespace instead of failing on a missing target.

helm upgrade -i myapp ./mychart -n prod --create-namespace --atomic

atomic vs cleanup-on-fail

Without atomic, a failed install can leave orphaned resources. Use --cleanup-on-fail to delete what was created when an upgrade goes wrong.

Authenticate the Runner First

Your CI job needs cluster access, so load a kubeconfig from a secret before deploying. Helm reuses that context exactly like kubectl does.

Quick Check

An automated deploy fails midway. Which flag makes Helm undo it automatically?

Recap: Safe, Repeatable Rollouts

Use helm upgrade -i --atomic --timeout for hands-off deploys that self-rollback on failure. One command, install or upgrade, every run. ✅
