Why upgrade Exists

Once a release is running, you rarely reinstall it. To change anything, you use helm upgrade to apply new settings to the same release. 🔄

The Basic Shape

An upgrade takes the release name first, then the chart it should use. Helm computes the diff and rolls it out for you.

helm upgrade my-app bitnami/nginx

Same Name, New State

The release name must match an existing release. Helm finds it, builds the new manifests, and updates only what actually changed.

Changing Values

The most common reason to upgrade is new configuration. Pass --set to tweak a single value without editing any chart files.

helm upgrade my-app bitnami/nginx --set replicaCount=3

Upgrading the Chart Version

You can also move to a newer chart with --version. This pulls fresh templates while keeping your release identity intact.

helm upgrade my-app bitnami/nginx --version 15.5.0

Reuse or Reset Values

By default an upgrade re-derives values from the chart plus your flags. Add --reuse-values to keep the values from the last release too.

helm upgrade my-app bitnami/nginx --reuse-values --set image.tag=1.27

Wait for Readiness

Add --wait and Helm blocks until the new pods are actually ready, instead of returning the moment the API accepts the change. ✅

helm upgrade my-app bitnami/nginx --wait --timeout 5m

Atomic Upgrades

The --atomic flag makes Helm roll back automatically if the upgrade fails, so a broken deploy never leaves you stuck halfway.

helm upgrade my-app bitnami/nginx --atomic

Each Upgrade Is a Revision

Every successful upgrade bumps the release revision number by one. That history is what makes a later rollback possible.

Upgrade From a Local Chart

The chart argument can be a local path too. Point upgrade at your own chart directory while you iterate on it.
