Transposition Ciphers

Unlike substitution ciphers, transposition ciphers rearrange the letters of the plaintext according to a specific pattern.

How Transposition Works

Instead of replacing letters, transposition ciphers shuffle their positions using a defined rule.

Types of Transposition Ciphers

  • Rail Fence Cipher: Writes the plaintext in a zigzag pattern.
  • Columnar Transposition: Rearranges letters by writing them in columns.

Rail Fence Cipher

Arranges the text in a zigzag pattern across multiple rows and then reads it row by row.

Columnar Transposition

Writes the plaintext into columns and then reads it in a different order based on a keyword.

Encryption Process

  • Write the message according to the chosen transposition method.

  • The output is the encrypted message.

  • Rearrange the ciphertext using the same rule in reverse.
