In this lesson we explore cryptography from ancient Egypt and Rome through the Renaissance. Humans have always needed to keep secrets!

Egyptian Hieroglyphs

Around 1900 BCE, Egyptian scribes used unusual hieroglyphs to obscure tomb inscriptions. This is the earliest known use of deliberate cipher writing.

Hebrew Atbash

The Atbash cipher replaced each letter with its mirror opposite (A↔Z, B↔Y). It appears in the Book of Jeremiah around 600 BCE.

Spartan Scytale

The Spartan scytale (5th century BCE) was a cylinder used for transposition. A leather strip wound around it revealed the message only when using the correct diameter.

Caesar & Rome

Julius Caesar used a ROT-3 substitution cipher for military dispatches. It is named after him even though the idea predates him by centuries.

Al-Kindi & Frequency Analysis

In 850 CE, Arab polymath Al-Kindi wrote the first known paper on cryptanalysis, describing frequency analysis — counting letter occurrences to break ciphers.

Vigenère Cipher

Blaise de Vigenère introduced a polyalphabetic cipher in 1553 that was unbreakable for 300 years until Kasiski published his attack in 1863.

Enigma Machine

The German Enigma machine (1920s–1940s) combined rotors and plugboard to produce 158 quintillion settings. Cracking it at Bletchley Park shortened WWII.

Birth of Modern Crypto

In 1949, Claude Shannon published 'Communication Theory of Secrecy Systems', giving cryptography rigorous mathematical foundations for the first time.

Public-Key Revolution

In 1976, Diffie and Hellman published 'New Directions in Cryptography', introducing public-key cryptography and changing everything we know about secure communication.

Timeline Summary

From hieroglyphs to RSA, each era built on the last. Classical ciphers relied on secrecy of the method; modern crypto relies on mathematical hardness.
