Shield Standard versus Shield Advanced

AWS Shield comes in two tiers. Shield Standard is free and on for everyone; Shield Advanced is a paid subscription that adds enhanced protection, visibility, support, and financial safeguards. Knowing exactly what each tier covers is a high-yield exam topic.

Shield Standard automatically protects all AWS customers against the most common Layer 3 and Layer 4 attacks at no charge. It requires no setup and is always active, especially effective for resources behind CloudFront and Route 53. It is the baseline every account already has.

Shield Advanced is a paid tier (a substantial monthly commitment plus data fees) that builds on Standard with deeper detection, larger attack mitigation, cost protection, and access to specialists. It is aimed at organizations whose availability is business-critical or who are frequent targets.

Advanced adds near-real-time visibility into attacks through the Shield console and detailed metrics, plus health-based detection that uses your application Route 53 health checks to spot attacks faster and reduce false positives. Standard does not surface this level of attack detail.

With Advanced you explicitly protect specific resources: CloudFront distributions, Route 53 hosted zones, Global Accelerator, Elastic IPs, and Application or Classic Load Balancers. Enrolling resources unlocks the advanced mitigations and reporting for them, whereas Standard applies broadly but shallowly.

Shield Advanced integrates with AWS WAF at no additional WAF charge for protected resources, so you can deploy WAF rules to mitigate application-layer DDoS without separate WAF fees. This tight coupling is a key reason Advanced is chosen for Layer 7 resilience.

Advanced can automatically create and apply WAF rules during an application-layer attack when you enable automatic mitigation. It baselines normal traffic and crafts rate-based or block rules to shed attack traffic, then removes them as the attack subsides, reducing manual response time.

A standout Advanced benefit is DDoS cost protection: AWS provides service credits for scaling charges (extra EC2, ELB, CloudFront, Route 53 usage) incurred because of a documented DDoS event on protected resources. This shields you from surprise bills caused by attack-driven scaling.

Advanced grants access to the Shield Response Team (SRT), AWS DDoS experts who help during active attacks. With proper authorization they can apply mitigations on your behalf. Standard customers do not get this hands-on support, relying on automated defenses alone.

Choose Standard when default Layer 3/4 protection suffices and you can handle Layer 7 with WAF yourself. Choose Advanced when you need guaranteed availability, attack visibility, cost protection, automatic Layer 7 mitigation, and expert assistance, typically for revenue-critical or high-profile workloads.

Across many accounts, AWS Firewall Manager can centrally apply Shield Advanced protections and WAF policies to resources organization-wide. This ensures new resources automatically receive DDoS protection without each team enrolling them manually, a governance win for large estates.
