Replicate Data Across Regions
Welcome to S3 Cross-Region Replication (CRR)! This powerful feature allows you to automatically copy objects between S3 buckets in different AWS regions.

How CRR Works
Cross-Region Replication operates by copying objects from a source bucket in one AWS region to a destination bucket in a different AWS region.
Once configured, S3 automatically replicates new objects, object updates, and optionally delete markers, asynchronously. This means there might be a slight delay before the object appears in the destination.
CRR Prerequisite: Versioning
A critical requirement for CRR is that both your source and destination S3 buckets must have versioning enabled.
Versioning keeps multiple versions of an object in the same bucket. This is essential for replication as it tracks changes and ensures that all modifications are replicated, not just the latest state.
CRR Prerequisite: IAM Permissions
AWS needs permission to replicate objects on your behalf. You'll need to create an IAM (Identity and Access Management) role that Amazon S3 can assume.
This role must have permissions to read objects from the source bucket and write objects to the destination bucket. Without proper permissions, replication will fail.
Setting Up: Buckets & Regions
To set up CRR, you'll first need two S3 buckets:
- Source Bucket: The bucket containing the objects you want to replicate. Enable versioning on it.
- Destination Bucket: A bucket in a different AWS region where the replicated objects will be stored. Also, enable versioning on this bucket.
Ensure the destination bucket is in a distinct region from your source for true disaster recovery.
Setting Up: The Replication Rule
After preparing your buckets and IAM role, you'll define a replication rule on your source bucket.
This rule specifies:
- Which objects to replicate (e.g., all objects, or objects with a specific prefix).
- The destination bucket and its region.
- The IAM role S3 should use for replication.
You can manage these rules in the S3 console under the 'Management' tab of your source bucket.
What Gets Replicated?
When CRR is active, S3 replicates:
- New objects uploaded to the source bucket.
- Object updates (new versions) of existing objects.
- Object metadata and access control lists (ACLs).
- Optionally, delete markers (if configured).
Important: Objects existing in the source bucket *before* the replication rule was created are generally not replicated by default. You can use S3 Batch Replication for existing objects.
Monitoring Replication Status
It's vital to monitor your CRR setup to ensure data is replicating successfully. S3 integrates with Amazon CloudWatch to provide replication metrics.
You can track metrics like Operations pending replication and Replication latency to identify any issues and ensure your RPO (Recovery Point Objective) is met.
