What's the App Store Funnel?

Welcome to understanding the App Store Conversion Funnel! This concept is crucial for ASO (App Store Optimization).

It maps out the journey a potential user takes, from first seeing your app to finally downloading it. Think of it as a roadmap of user decisions.

Step 1: App Discovery

The first stage is Discovery. This is when users first encounter your app in the app store.

  • They might find it through a search query.
  • Browse categories or charts.
  • See it featured by the app store.

At this stage, your app gets an impression – meaning it was displayed to a user.

Step 2: Product Page View

After discovery, if your app's icon and title catch a user's eye, they might tap on it. This leads them to your app's Product Page.

On this page, users see more details: screenshots, videos, a longer description, ratings, and reviews. This is where they learn more about your app.

Step 3: Conversion (Install)

The final, most desired stage is Conversion. If your product page successfully convinces the user, they will tap the 'Get' or 'Install' button.

A successful download or install marks a conversion. This is the ultimate goal of the funnel: turning a browser into a user!

Visualizing the Funnel

Why call it a 'funnel'? Because at each step, fewer users proceed.

  • Many users see your app (Discovery).
  • Fewer click to your product page (Product Page View).
  • Even fewer download it (Conversion).

It visually narrows down, much like a real funnel, showing user attrition.

Key Conversion Points

There are critical decision points where users decide whether to move forward:

  • Discovery to Product Page: Your app icon, title, and subtitle are key here.
  • Product Page to Install: Screenshots, description, video, ratings, and reviews are vital.

Optimizing these elements directly impacts your conversion rates.

Identifying Drop-Off Areas

Understanding the funnel helps identify where users are 'dropping off' and not progressing.

  • High drop-off after Discovery? Your icon or title might not be appealing enough.
  • High drop-off after Product Page View? Your screenshots, description, or reviews might not be convincing.

Pinpointing these areas helps you focus your ASO efforts.

Key Funnel Metrics

To measure funnel performance, we track specific metrics:

  • Impressions: How many times your app was displayed.
  • Product Page Views: How many clicked through to your app's page.
  • Installs: How many downloaded your app.
  • Conversion Rate: The percentage of users who completed a desired action (e.g., installs / page views).

Optimizing Each Funnel Stage

Each stage requires different optimization tactics:

  • Discovery: Strong keywords, relevant categories.
  • Product Page View: Engaging icon, clear title/subtitle.
  • Conversion: Compelling screenshots/videos, persuasive description, positive reviews.

By improving each step, you can guide more users to install your app.

Funnel in Action Example

Let's look at an example:

  • 10,000 Impressions (users saw your app)
  • 1,000 Product Page Views (users clicked to learn more)
  • 100 Installs (users downloaded the app)

The conversion rate from Product Page View to Install is (100 / 1000) * 100% = 10%.

Check Your Funnel Knowledge

Imagine your app had 8,000 impressions, 800 product page views, and 80 installs last week.

What is the conversion rate from Discovery (Impressions) to Product Page View?
