What are ASO Metrics?
Welcome! In App Store Optimization (ASO), we don't just guess what works. We use data to understand how our app performs.
ASO metrics are key performance indicators (KPIs) that help us measure visibility, user interest, and conversion in app stores.
Tracking these numbers is crucial for making smart decisions and improving your app's success.
Understanding Impressions
First up: Impressions. This metric tells you how many times your app was shown to users in the app store.
- It includes appearances in search results.
- It includes appearances in "Today" tabs, "Games" or "Apps" tabs, or featured lists.
It doesn't mean users clicked your app, just that they saw it. High impressions mean your app has good visibility!
Product Page Views
After seeing your app, some users will click to learn more. This is a Product Page View.
- It counts how many times users visited your app's dedicated page in the app store.
- It shows initial interest beyond just seeing your icon or title.
A high number of page views, compared to impressions, suggests your app listing (icon, title) is appealing.
Cracking Conversion Rate
The Conversion Rate (CVR) is super important! It measures how many users who view your app's page actually download it.
It's calculated as: (Downloads / Product Page Views) * 100%.
A good CVR means your app's listing—screenshots, description, reviews—is effective at convincing users to install.
Tracking Downloads & Installs
Downloads (or Installs) are the ultimate goal of ASO: getting users to add your app to their device.
- This metric directly impacts your app's ranking in app store algorithms.
- More downloads often lead to higher visibility and more organic growth.
App stores differentiate between first-time downloads and re-downloads, which can be useful for deeper analysis.
Checking Keyword Rankings
Keyword Rankings show where your app appears in search results for specific keywords.
- If your app ranks #1 for "puzzle game," it means it's the first result users see.
- Tracking these rankings helps you understand if your keyword optimization efforts are working.
Higher rankings for relevant keywords directly lead to more impressions and potential downloads.
Reading the ASO Funnel
Think of these metrics as steps in a funnel: Impressions at the top, leading to Product Page Views, then to Downloads.
- Low impressions? Focus on keyword optimization or featuring.
- High impressions but low page views? Your icon/title might need work.
- High page views but low downloads? Improve screenshots, description, or reviews.
Each drop-off point tells you where to focus your ASO efforts.
Beyond Downloads: Retention
While ASO focuses on getting installs, it's also important that users keep and use your app.
Retention Rate measures how many users return to your app after a certain period (e.g., 7 days, 30 days).
High retention signals a quality app, which can indirectly boost ASO through positive reviews and algorithm favorability.
Why ASO Metrics are Key
By regularly monitoring these KPIs, you gain insights into your app's performance.
- Identify strengths and weaknesses in your app store presence.
- Measure the impact of your ASO changes.
- Make data-driven decisions to continuously improve visibility and downloads.
This data helps you stay competitive and grow your user base.
