The AARRR Funnel
A common framework to visualize the user journey is the AARRR Funnel, also known as Pirate Metrics. It helps categorize user actions:
- Awareness: Users know about your app.
- Acquisition: Users download your app.
- Activation: Users have their first positive experience.
- Retention: Users keep coming back.
- Revenue: Users pay for your app.
- Referral: Users invite others.
Pinpointing Weak Links
To find bottlenecks, you track conversion rates between each AARRR stage. For example, how many acquired users actually activate?
If only a small percentage move from one stage to the next, you've found a bottleneck. This is where your growth efforts should focus first.
What is a Growth Hypothesis?
Once you've identified a bottleneck, you need to propose a solution. This proposed solution, stated as a testable idea, is a hypothesis.
A hypothesis is an educated guess about how a change might impact user behavior or a specific metric. It's the foundation of any experiment.
Crafting a Strong Hypothesis
A good growth hypothesis follows a specific structure. It should be clear, concise, and measurable:
- "If we [ACTION], then [RESULT], because [REASON]."
This structure helps you define what you're changing, what you expect to happen, and why you believe it will work.
Hypothesis Example
Let's say your bottleneck is low user activation (users download but don't complete onboarding).
A hypothesis could be: "If we simplify the onboarding flow to 3 steps, then new user activation will increase by 15%, because a shorter flow reduces friction and cognitive load."
Prioritizing with ICE
You might have many hypotheses. How do you choose which to test first? The ICE Framework helps prioritize:
- Impact: How much will this change affect your key metric? (1-10)
- Confidence: How sure are you that this change will work? (1-10)
- Ease: How difficult is it to implement this change? (1-10, lower is easier)
Multiply these scores (Impact * Confidence * Ease) to get a priority score.
Growth Experiment Framework
A structured growth framework ensures your experiments are effective and repeatable. It often involves these steps:
- Identify: Pinpoint a bottleneck.
- Hypothesize: Formulate a testable solution.
- Prioritize: Use ICE or similar to rank hypotheses.
- Test: Run an A/B test or experiment.
- Analyze: Evaluate results and learn.
- Iterate: Refine, scale, or discard the idea.
