Why a Design Process?
Complex systems need a roadmap. The system design process is a structured way to plan and build software that is robust, scalable, and actually meets user needs.
Step 1: Gather Requirements
Step one is gathering requirements: functional (what it does, like "users can register") and non-functional (how well, like "loads in under a second").
Functional vs. Non-functional
Quick distinction: functional requirements are verbs — the actions a system performs. Non-functional are adjectives — speed, reliability, security. Both matter.
Step 2: Estimate & Set Scope
Next, estimate the scale: how many users, requests per second, and data? These back-of-the-envelope numbers expose bottlenecks early and steer your design.
Step 3: High-Level Design
Now sketch the high-level design — the big picture of clients, servers, databases, and major services, and how they connect. Skip the tiny details for now.
Step 4: Deep Dive into Components
Pick one critical component and do a deep dive: its exact responsibilities and how it talks to the rest. This is where specifics finally come in.
Step 5 & 6: Data & APIs (Briefly)
During the deep dive, sketch the data model (how data is structured and stored) and the API design (how this component talks to others). Just first drafts.
Step 7: Evaluate Trade-offs
There is no perfect solution — every choice is a trade-off. A simpler database may be faster to build but less scalable. Weigh options against your requirements and justify them.
Step 8: Iterate & Refine
Design never ends; it is iterative. Gather feedback, find the gaps, and refine — so the system keeps improving as new challenges appear.
Design Process Check
You've learned the key steps in a structured system design process. Let's do a quick check to see if you remember the typical starting point.
Recap: The Design Flow
You now know the design flow: requirements, estimation, high-level design, deep dives, trade-offs, and iteration — a structured path to scalable systems.
