NVDA is a free, open-source Windows screen reader. You download it from NV Access, install it, and it starts reading right away. 🎧

Once installed, you launch NVDA with the shortcut Control plus Alt plus N. It begins announcing whatever has focus on screen.

VoiceOver ships built into every Mac. You toggle it instantly with Command plus F5, no download or install needed.

On iPhone and iPad, VoiceOver lives in Settings under Accessibility. Tip Siri or triple-click the side button to flip it on fast.

Android's built-in reader is TalkBack. You enable it under Settings, Accessibility, then test how real Android users hear your page.

Screen readers pair best with certain browsers: NVDA with Firefox or Chrome, and VoiceOver with Safari. Test the combos your users actually run.

Sighted testing is easier with the screen off. NVDA lets you mute the display or speed up speech once your ears adjust to the voice.
