Devices You Can't Reach
Once a sensor is sealed in a wall or on a rooftop, plugging in a USB cable is painful. OTA lets you update its code wirelessly instead.
What OTA Stands For
Over-the-Air means sending new firmware to a device through WiFi, with no physical cable touching the board at all.
Why It Matters at Scale
Imagine fifty boards spread across a building. Visiting each one with a laptop wastes hours, so remote updates become essential. 🚀
Fixing Bugs Fast
A shipped device will eventually hide a bug. With OTA you push a fix the same day, instead of recalling hardware from the field.
Adding New Features
OTA is not only for repairs. You can roll out fresh features to devices already in customers' hands, keeping them useful for years.
WiFi Is the Carrier
OTA needs a network path, so it lives on WiFi boards like the ESP32. The chip must already be connected before any update can flow.
The Update Travels as Bytes
Your compiled sketch becomes a binary file. OTA streams that firmware image over the air and writes it into the chip's flash memory.
Two Slots in Flash
The chip keeps the running app while it stores the incoming one in a second partition, so a half-finished transfer can't break the device.
Swap Happens on Reboot
Only after the full image arrives and checks out does the board reboot into the new code. A dropped connection leaves the old one running.
Security Is Not Optional
An open update path is a door for attackers. Real OTA setups demand a password or signature so only you can flash the device.
Three Common OTA Styles
You can update from the IDE with ArduinoOTA, from a browser upload form, or pull a file from a server on a schedule.
Quick Check
Think about what OTA actually replaces in your workflow.
Recap
OTA updates send new firmware over WiFi to devices you can't easily reach, letting you fix bugs and add features safely and remotely. 🎯
