A tag is a key-value label you attach to AWS resources, like Environment=prod or Team=payments.

Tags are the foundation of organizing and tracking spending across a large AWS account.

Without tags, a bill is one big number. With tags, you can answer questions like:

• How much does the staging environment cost?
• Which team spends the most?
• What is the cost of project X?

You can tag a resource at creation or afterward. Here we tag an EC2 instance.

To see tags in billing reports, you must activate them as cost allocation tags in the Billing console. Only then do they appear as dimensions in Cost Explorer.

Two categories of cost allocation tags:

• AWS-generated (e.g. aws:createdBy) — added automatically
• User-defined — the tags you create yourself

Decide a standard set of keys everyone uses, such as:

• Environment
• Team or CostCenter
• Project
• Owner

Consistency is what makes reports meaningful.

Tag policies in AWS Organizations and IAM conditions can require certain tags on new resources, preventing untagged sprawl.

Once activated, Cost Explorer lets you group and filter spend by tag, so you can chart cost per team or per environment over time.

Tags also help with:

• Automation (e.g. shut down all Environment=dev at night)
• Access control via tag-based IAM policies
• Resource grouping in Resource Groups

Use the Tag Editor and AWS Config to locate resources missing required tags, then bulk-apply the correct labels.

To succeed with tagging:

• Define a schema early
• Enforce it with policies
• Activate tags for cost allocation
• Audit for untagged resources regularly
