To use WhatsApp with OpenClaw you first pair the channel. Pairing links your phone to the assistant so messages can flow.

WhatsApp does not connect directly to the agent. It connects through the Gateway, which manages all of OpenClaw's chat bridges.

The Gateway is the single source of truth for routing and connections. Every channel pairs through it, so it owns the WhatsApp link too.

The guided onboarding wizard walks you through pairing flows. It is the easiest way to get WhatsApp linked step by step.

During onboarding you choose WhatsApp and follow the pairing flow it shows. The wizard tells you exactly what to do on your phone.

WhatsApp pairing happens through its own linked-devices step on your phone, just like connecting WhatsApp Web. The wizard guides this.

Onboarding can install the persistent daemon. It runs the Gateway in the background so your paired channel stays connected.

Open the local dashboard to confirm WhatsApp is paired and the Gateway is running. It is your window into the connection.

Once paired, you do not repeat the flow each time. The Gateway remembers the connection so messages just work afterward.

The Gateway lives locally on your hardware. WhatsApp simply bridges into it, keeping the assistant itself off the cloud.
