In this lesson, we'll explore two powerful ways to reduce your AWS compute bill: Reserved Instances (RIs) and Savings Plans.
Meet Reserved Instances (RIs)
Reserved Instances (RIs) allow you to commit to using EC2 instances for a 1-year or 3-year term. In return, AWS gives you a significant discount compared to on-demand pricing.
- Think of it like a long-term rental agreement for a virtual server.
- You pay a fixed amount upfront or monthly for the commitment.
- RIs are great for stable, predictable workloads that run continuously.
How RIs Work

- This hourly commitment applies to a broader range of services, including EC2, Fargate, and Lambda.
How Savings Plans Work
With Savings Plans, you commit to a consistent hourly spend for a 1-year or 3-year term, similar to RIs.
- Hourly Commitment: You agree to spend, for example, $5 per hour for 3 years.
- Automatic Coverage: This commitment automatically applies to your usage of eligible compute services. Any usage up to your committed amount is charged at the discounted Savings Plan rate.

EC2 vs. Compute Savings Plans
