MetaMask is a popular cryptocurrency wallet that functions as a browser extension. It allows you to store and manage your digital assets, like Ether (ETH) and other tokens.

Think of it as a secure bridge between your web browser and the Ethereum blockchain. It's essential for interacting with most decentralized applications (DApps).

MetaMask is available for popular browsers like Chrome, Firefox, Brave, and Edge. Installation is straightforward, just like any other browser extension.

• Step 1: Visit the official MetaMask website.
• Step 2: Click 'Download' and select your browser.
• Step 3: Add the extension to your browser.

After installation, you'll be prompted to set up your wallet. You have two options:

• Create a new wallet: This is for new users. MetaMask will generate a new set of keys for you.
• Import wallet: If you already have a wallet, you can import it using your Secret Recovery Phrase.

For this lesson, we'll focus on creating a new one.

When creating a new wallet, MetaMask will show you a 12-word Secret Recovery Phrase (also called a seed phrase or mnemonic).

• This phrase is the master key to ALL your crypto assets.
• Write it down physically and store it in a very safe, private place.
• NEVER share it with anyone, type it online, or store it digitally.

Losing it means losing access to your funds; sharing it means someone else gains access.

After securing your Secret Recovery Phrase, you'll create a password for your MetaMask wallet. This password:

• Encrypts your wallet on your local device.
• Is required each time you open the extension or confirm transactions (if set to auto-lock).

Remember, this password protects local access; the Secret Recovery Phrase is the ultimate backup.

Once set up, the MetaMask interface shows key information:

• Account Address: Your public address for receiving funds.
• Network Selector: Shows which blockchain network you're connected to (e.g., Ethereum Mainnet).
• Asset List: Displays your cryptocurrencies and tokens.
• Activity Tab: Shows your transaction history.

MetaMask's primary role is to connect you to DApps. When you visit a DApp, it will often prompt you to 'Connect Wallet'.

• Clicking this usually triggers a MetaMask pop-up.
• You approve the connection, allowing the DApp to view your public address.
• The DApp can then propose transactions for you to sign and approve.

Always review the DApp's requested permissions carefully!

MetaMask supports various EVM-compatible networks. The network selector at the top allows you to switch between them:

• Ethereum Mainnet: The primary, live Ethereum blockchain.
• Testnets (e.g., Sepolia, Goerli): Replica networks for developers to test DApps without using real funds.
• Custom RPC: For connecting to other EVM chains (e.g., Polygon, BNB Smart Chain) or local development environments.

Ensure you're on the correct network for the DApp you're using!

MetaMask automatically displays common tokens. However, for less common ERC-20 tokens, you might need to add them manually:

• Go to the 'Assets' tab and click 'Import tokens'.
• Enter the token's contract address.
• MetaMask will usually auto-fill the token symbol and decimals.

This doesn't move the token, it just makes it visible in your wallet!
