Why Warehouse Your Billing Data?

The Stripe Dashboard answers operational questions, but deep analytics (cohorts, LTV, churn by segment) need your data in a warehouse alongside product data.

Three Ways to Get the Data

  • Stripe Sigma - SQL inside Stripe
  • Data Pipeline - native sync to Snowflake/Redshift
  • Event/API sync - your own ETL via webhooks and the API

Stripe Sigma

Sigma lets you run SQL queries directly against your Stripe data without exporting it, great for quick reporting.

SELECT status, count(*)
FROM subscriptions
GROUP BY status;

Stripe Data Pipeline

Data Pipeline delivers a managed, no-code sync of your complete Stripe dataset into Snowflake or Amazon Redshift on a schedule.

Building Your Own ETL

For BigQuery or Postgres, build an event-driven sync: listen to webhooks, then upsert the object into your warehouse table.

function toRow(invoice) {
  return {
    id: invoice.id,
    customer: invoice.customer,
    amount: invoice.amount_paid,
    status: invoice.status
  };
}

Upserts Over Inserts

Objects change (an invoice gets paid). Use upsert keyed by the Stripe id so updates replace rather than duplicate rows.

function upsert(table, row) {
  table[row.id] = row; // replace by id
  return Object.keys(table).length;
}
const t = {};
upsert(t, { id: 'in_1', status: 'open' });
console.log(upsert(t, { id: 'in_1', status: 'paid' }));

Backfilling History

Webhooks only cover new events. Use the list API to backfill historical objects with pagination before going incremental.

// for await (const inv of stripe.invoices.list({ limit: 100 }).autoPagingEach(...))

Handling Schema Drift

Stripe adds fields over time. Store the full JSON object plus key columns, so new fields are available without breaking the pipeline.

Modeling Revenue Metrics

In the warehouse, transform raw objects into models: MRR, ARR, churn, and net revenue retention, joined with product usage data.

Keeping Data Fresh

Combine an initial backfill with continuous webhook syncing so the warehouse stays near real time without re-pulling everything.

Security of Exported Data

Warehouse data still includes customer info. Apply access controls and avoid storing raw card data, which Stripe never exposes anyway.

Quick Check

When syncing Stripe objects to a warehouse, why upsert by id?

Recap

You learned to warehouse Stripe data:

  • Sigma for in-Stripe SQL, Data Pipeline for managed sync
  • Custom ETL via webhooks with upserts by id
  • Backfill history, then stay incremental
  • Model MRR/churn and secure exported customer data
