Anatomy of a Pipeline
A typical pipeline has stages: checkout, dependency install, build, test, sign, and distribute. Each stage gates the next.
Building from the Command Line
CI servers build headlessly with xcodebuild. Master this command before automating it.

Store certificates and provisioning profiles in a secure encrypted store, never in the repo. CI imports them into a temporary keychain at build time.
Archiving and Exporting
For distribution, archive then export an IPA with an export options plist describing the signing method.

Cache CocoaPods and DerivedData between runs to speed builds. Legacy projects with many pods benefit hugely from caching.
Versioning Builds
Inject the build number from the CI run number so every artifact is uniquely identifiable.

Upload to App Store Connect or an enterprise MDM. Automate the upload so QA always tests the exact CI artifact.

Order cheap stages first. Run linting and unit tests before the expensive archive so failures are caught quickly and cheaply.
Secrets and Auditability
Keep API keys and signing secrets in the CI secret store. Log every build with its commit hash so security teams can trace any released binary back to source.
