Views Form a Tree

When you nest views inside one another, they form a hierarchy, a tree of parent and child views. 🌳

Parent and Child Views

A view that contains others is a parent. The views inside it are its children, and each child can have children too.

Stacks as Containers

Container views like VStack hold several children and arrange them. They are how you group multiple views into one body.

VStack {
    Text("Top")
    Text("Bottom")
}

Reading Nesting from Indentation

The deeper a view is indented, the deeper it sits in the tree. Indentation is your visual map of the hierarchy.

Nesting Inside Nesting

You can place stacks inside stacks. Here an HStack lives inside a VStack, creating two levels of nesting.

VStack {
    Text("Title")
    HStack {
        Text("Left")
        Text("Right")
    }
}

Modifiers Live in the Tree

A modifier on a parent can affect the whole branch beneath it, while a modifier on a child affects only that child.

Scope of a Modifier

Here padding wraps the entire VStack, so the spacing surrounds both children together, not each one alone.

VStack {
    Text("A")
    Text("B")
}
.padding()

The Whole Screen Is a Tree

Your entire screen is one big view tree, starting from ContentView at the root and branching outward to every label.

Inspecting the Hierarchy in Xcode

Xcode can show the hierarchy visually. The preview and view debugger let you click a view and see its place in the tree. 🔍

Why the Hierarchy Matters

Understanding the tree helps you predict layout. Knowing what contains what explains why views sit where they do.

Keeping Trees Shallow

Deeply nested trees get hard to read. Extracting subviews keeps the hierarchy shallow and your code easy to follow. 🌿

Quick Check

Let's check how nested views relate to each other.

Recap: The View Hierarchy

Nested views form a tree of parents and children. Indentation shows nesting, modifiers affect their branch, and shallow trees stay readable. 🎉
