Two Ways to Build an API
You know what GraphQL is and how to set it up. So how does it stack up against REST? Knowing the trade-offs beats following the hype.
REST in One Minute
REST exposes resources as URLs and uses HTTP verbs — GET /users/1 reads, POST /users creates. Each endpoint returns a fixed, server-defined shape.
GraphQL in One Minute
GraphQL exposes one endpoint and a typed schema. The client asks for exactly the fields it wants — here, just a user’s name and email.
query {
user(id: 1) {
name
email
}
}Over-Fetching and Under-Fetching
REST’s classic pain: over-fetching returns more than you need, under-fetching forces many calls per screen. GraphQL lets the client shape the response.
Fetching Related Data
Fetching a user plus their posts is two REST round trips, but a single GraphQL query. Related data, one request.
query {
user(id: 1) {
name
posts { title }
}
}Where REST Still Shines
REST still wins for simple CRUD with stable shapes, URL-based HTTP caching, and file or binary streams. It’s mature and uses the whole HTTP toolbox.
Where GraphQL Shines
GraphQL shines when client needs vary (web plus mobile on one API), data is deeply related, or frontends evolve fast and need flexible queries.
Caching: A Key Difference
A key gap: REST caches naturally on URLs via HTTP, but GraphQL POSTs to one endpoint, so it leans on client-side normalized caches and persisted queries.
Error Handling and Status Codes
REST signals failure with HTTP status codes like 404 and 500. GraphQL usually returns 200 with an errors array — changing how clients detect problems.
Spring Boot Supports Both
You don’t have to choose: Spring Boot serves REST controllers and GraphQL from the same app, side by side.
@RestController
class UserController {
@GetMapping("/users/{id}")
User get(@PathVariable Long id) { return null; }
}
// alongside a @Controller with @QueryMapping for GraphQLIt Is Not All or Nothing
It’s not all-or-nothing. Plenty of systems use both — REST for simple resources and webhooks, GraphQL for complex client-driven reads. Choose per use case.
Quick Check
When does GraphQL beat REST — and when does it lose?
Recap
You compared the two: GraphQL fixes over/under-fetching with client-shaped queries, REST wins for cacheable URL resources, and Spring Boot serves both.
