Doing RE responsibly isn't just dodging trouble — it's managing legal risks (copyright, DMCA), ethical risks, and your reputation. Intent and context are everything.

Software is protected by copyright, giving creators exclusive rights to copy and distribute it. RE often copies code into memory, but fair use and interoperability exceptions exist.

In the US, the DMCA (Section 1201) bans circumventing access controls like encryption — even without intent to infringe. Exemptions for security research are narrow.

A EULA is a contract that often forbids reverse engineering outright. Breaking it isn't a crime, but it's a breach of contract that can bring civil suits.

The most accepted ethical use is security research: analyzing software to find vulnerabilities, then disclosing them responsibly so vendors can patch.
